12 Gnomides by Jean Lescure (1912-2005)
from "Gnomides", (Editions Proverbe 1999)

accompanied by 11 engravings (woodcuts and
etchings) and a sculpted box by Marie-Paule Lesage.

Gnomes, whatever Nerval may have to say
on the subject, are unruly and irritating little spirits.
Their land is their estate. We know all that.
But how well do we know that their womenfolk,
the gnomides, are beautiful, sweet and
good-natured? Taking innocent advantage
of their Greek and Paracelsian origins, they
readily express their feelings in short poems.

                                              Jean Lescure

Laos or the nation of a Million Elephants is where I spent several months
in an artistic residency. Given the importance that official stamps have there
and the materials available locally, engraving on rubber erasers seemed natural
when it came to talking about elephants.
Short texts were commissioned from contemporary writers
each of whom chose seven erasers from my flock. The texts were printed
on an office printer, the eraser prints are made directly on to each book.
I arranged the page layout myself.
Stitch bound, the books are signed and numbered by the authors.
There is no final number of copies in the edition which is produced to order.
