...I can imagine the roars of pleasure of that old lion Ungaretti at seeing his poems so admirably illustrated. Even though I can’t roar like he did (Paulhan claimed that his angry shouting stopped a metro train in Paris) my sense of wonder is fully as powerful as he would have felt.
I have worked on books with Music, Gischia, Zao Wou Ki, Singier, Fiorini … They were friends. Their engravings truly expressed a partnership between their art and my poems. But never until I looked at your book I have so strongly felt the secret relationship between the engraver’s imagination and that of the poet…
